Chapter 6

The fire burned high into the night. The pyre was built taller than a man. The roar of it was like a thing alive. The cultists bowed their heads, forbidden to look at the conflagration.

Above the roar of the flames was the voice. The words of power yelled with conviction. With the power of faith.

Weaves of energy flowed to the fire. Bogdan pulled the massive threads of Death, struggling with them as though they were wild horses. He had never experienced anything like it in his life. The power was immense and new to him, but he could handle it. He would handle it.

The others weaved powers unknown to him. Some he could see, some he could not. Some made his skin crawl and his gut twist in knots. He did not like these other people. But it did not matter. Whatever power they might wield was nothing compared to his own. His was the power of Death. It was the end of all things. Their power only played at the surface of the world that he created.

“Are you prepared?” the voice yelled. The weaves reeled and whipped in his grasp. He would not let go.

“Yes,” Bogdan yelled, along with the others.

“The way is open,” the voice yelled. “Follow the way!”

Bogdan plunged the weaves of Death into the fire, the other powers at his side wrapped around it, flowing along and under his own energy. And then the blade bit into his throat.

Metal slid across his neck. The force behind it was swift and brutally strong. He barely had time to realize what happened before it was over. The blade cut flesh, muscle, esophagus and scraped right across bone. Bogdan Dalca was dead.
